The Prince Estate has officially unearthed a previously unheard recording of “With This Tear,” a soulful ballad that the music icon famously gifted to Celine Dion in the early 1990s.
Released through NPG Records and Legacy Recordings, this version showcases the legend at his most intimate. The track, captured at Paisley Park in November 1991, features Prince handling the piano and vocals himself, stripping the composition down to its raw, emotive core. While it has remained tucked away in his legendary vault for over three decades, the song finally sees the light of day as a pristine standalone piece.
Celine Dion’s renowned rendition of the song became a standout on her 1992 self-titled album. Her version remains a beloved classic, yet hearing Prince’s original take reveals a unique, melancholic depth that only the songwriter could provide. To ensure the highest audio quality, the track has been expertly remixed by Grammy-nominated producer Chris James, a frequent collaborator on projects involving the Prince archives.
This release serves as a poignant reminder of Prince’s prolific nature as a songwriter for his peers. Throughout his career, he frequently composed hits for other artists, often keeping his own foundational recordings in reserve. As we approach the tenth anniversary of his passing, the Estate continues its commitment to cataloging and sharing his vast creative legacy.
This latest addition follows a string of archival surprises, including the 2024 emergence of “Baby Doll,” a long-rumored collaboration with Kylie Minogue. As fan interest in these “lost” recordings continues to grow, many are looking forward to what other hidden treasures might eventually surface from the vault.
