Pokémon Winds and Waves Leaks Suggest Potential New Monster Type
With a plethora of 18 core elemental types, the Pokémon franchise boasts a staggering array of potential affinity pairings. After three decades of monster-catching, one might assume that Game Freak has exhausted every possible permutation. Given that the last major type addition—the Fairy type—debuted over a decade ago in 2013, it’s easy to conclude that the well of creativity has run dry through countless sequels and remakes.
Remarkably, that isn’t the case.
In reality, ten distinct type combinations remain entirely absent from the series. Some omissions are understandable; pairings like Normal/Ice, Normal/Bug, Normal/Rock, and Normal/Steel often feel like they would be dominated by their secondary type, making the “Normal” prefix feel redundant. However, Game Freak has shown a willingness to subvert these expectations before, as seen with the paradoxical Normal/Ghost typing of Hisuian Zorua and Zoroark.
The upcoming titles, Pokémon Winds and Waves, present a golden opportunity to fill these gaps. Five combinations in particular seem like prime candidates for a debut: Ice/Poison, Ground/Fairy, Bug/Dragon, Rock/Ghost, and the highly anticipated Fire/Fairy. It’s almost jarring to realize some of these don’t exist yet—one would think a haunted object like Yamask’s evolution would have claimed the Rock/Ghost title by now.
Speculation is rife regarding the likelihood of these new pairings. Among the starters, the fire-type Pombon is frequently cited as a candidate for the elusive Fire/Fairy typing. While its initial form lacks the traditional sparkles or pink hues associated with Fairy types, history shows that designs can shift dramatically. Fennekin’s transformation into the sorcerous Delphox in Pokémon X and Y was a surprise, even if it ultimately landed on Fire/Psychic. Pombon’s distinctive, brush-like crimson tuft might hint at a more whimsical, artistic evolution than its base form suggests.
The fervor for a Fire/Fairy type isn’t just about novelty; it’s about competitive viability. Industry analysts suggest this pairing would be a defensive powerhouse, boasting eight resistances and key immunities while maintaining offensive pressure against seven different types. While a Fire/Fairy Pombon would be a refreshing change, veterans remain wary of Game Freak’s historical tendency to fall back on the Fire/Fighting trope for final starter evolutions.
While the game’s central legends will likely stick to Water or Flying motifs, the diverse biomes showcased in the Winds and Waves trailers offer hope. Dense jungles and subterranean volcanic chambers provide the perfect thematic backdrop for introducing Bug/Dragon or Ground/Fairy species. There are even whispers of an entirely original element, with some fans positing the arrival of a Sound type.
More intriguing are the rumors from late 2025 regarding “Seed Pokémon.” Leaked documents describe these as rare, infant-stage creatures found in specific resort regions. According to the lore, these Pokémon only undergo metamorphosis when brought to the sanctuary of the region’s primary Legendary, resulting in “infinite variations” of their evolved forms.
As with all leaks, these claims should be taken with caution. Pokémon Winds and Waves is still deep in development, and internal concepts are often revised or discarded. Whether the “Seed” mechanic manifests as a permanent evolution or a temporary power-up akin to Mega Evolution remains to be seen. However, if the promise of infinite variety holds true, the list of unused type combinations may finally be destined for extinction.
