Kanto Classics Return: Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen Slated for Switch Launch
The Pokémon Company has officially confirmed that the beloved Kanto remakes, Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, will make their debut on the Nintendo Switch and its highly anticipated successor next week. These iconic titles are scheduled to arrive on February 27, coinciding with the annual Pokémon Day celebrations following a special Pokémon Presents broadcast.
Both games will be available individually for $19.99. Notably, these are download-exclusive releases, meaning fans shouldn’t expect a physical retail version at this time.
While whispers of these ports have circulated within the community for months, the timing of the announcement is a genuine surprise. Typically, The Pokémon Company reserves such reveals for the “shadow drop” excitement of a live presentation. By announcing the news a full week early, speculation is mounting that the upcoming Pokémon Presents might be clearing the stage for even more significant news—perhaps the formal unveiling of the tenth generation.
“Originally launched on the Game Boy Advance system in 2004, Pokémon FireRed Version and Pokémon LeafGreen Version will be coming to the Nintendo Switch system as download-exclusive titles to celebrate 30 years of Pokémon,” the official press release stated. “These titles will be accessible immediately following the Pokémon Presents showcase and are compatible with both the Nintendo Switch and the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2.”
The Pokémon Presents broadcast is set to air on Friday, February 27, at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET.
