PJ Harvey Returns With Cosmic New Track ‘Voyager’ Inspired by NASA Missions

PJ Harvey Channels the Cosmos in Atmospheric New Track “Voyager”

Acclaimed singer-songwriter PJ Harvey has cast her gaze toward the stars with her latest release, “Voyager.” The haunting new composition draws inspiration from NASA’s iconic Voyager space probes, which have been hurtling through the interstellar void since their launch in 1977.

While the melody originated during preliminary sessions for Harvey’s upcoming studio album, its trajectory shifted when physicist Professor Brian Cox reached out. He invited Harvey to contribute an original piece to Emergence, his ambitious upcoming U.K. stage production. This collaboration prompted Harvey to refine the song, eventually recording a lush, orchestral arrangement at the storied Miraval Studios in France.

The song’s thematic heart beats with a nod to the late astronomer Carl Sagan. Harvey masterfully weaves in the essence of Sagan’s Pale Blue Dot—the profound 1994 reflection on Earth’s fragility as viewed from the outer reaches of our solar system.

“I wanted to inhabit the voice of Voyager 2,” Harvey explained in a statement. “I spent time contemplating what a vessel on such a lonely, infinite journey might say to us. Writing for Professor Cox’s show provided the perfect canvas to explore that perspective. Collaborating with Dario Marianelli on the orchestral score allowed us to capture the sheer scale and profound isolation of deep space.”

This release follows the critical success of her 2023 album, I Inside the Old Year Dying, which marked her transition to Partisan Records. As a two-time Mercury Prize winner—the only artist to ever achieve the feat twice—Harvey continues to solidify her reputation as one of music’s most innovative and intellectually curious storytellers.
