Physical version of GTA VI faces threat of retail boycott

Independent game retailers are threatening to boycott GTA VI if the game lacks a traditional physical disc release. Players can currently pre-order standard and Ultimate editions, but these physical packages reportedly contain only a download code rather than the game data itself.

Rumors suggested a proper disc version might arrive months after the launch. However, The Hollywood Reporter indicates that Rockstar has no plans to release GTA VI on physical media at any point.

This strategy drew immediate criticism from retailers. The British shop Loot Box Gaming announced they will refuse to sell the title if the download-only format is confirmed. The Canadian retailer VGP took a similar stance, as the company maintains a policy against stocking physical boxes that contain no disc.

Sellers argue that download codes undermine the concept of physical ownership. They view physical discs as a more reliable way to preserve games compared to digital licenses.

Grand Theft Auto VI launches November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
