Peter Jackson Says He Is Finally Making Tintin Sequel

Tintin fans have waited a long time. After Steven Spielberg directed The Adventures of Tintin in 2011, he and producer Peter Jackson confirmed that a sequel was coming. They originally promised it for 2014 or 2015, with Jackson in the director’s chair. That didn’t happen.

Jackson has now given another update. At the Sitges Film Festival in Spain, which focuses on fantasy, horror, and cult films, he said the movie is still in the works. “We’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make,” he said. The comment backs up what Jackson said in May. Back then, he broke years of silence to confirm that a version of the script was finished and that he would direct.

What Tintin is about

Belgian cartoonist Hergé wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Tintin. The comic series ran in France from 1929 to 1976. It follows Tintin, a Belgian reporter, and his dog Snowy. In the 2011 film, Tintin goes searching for the treasure of the Unicorn, a legendary naval warship.

Jackson also talked about the future of The Lord of the Rings films. He said The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum is nearly done filming, with about two weeks of shooting left. He also repeated that The Shadow of the Past is still alive and in the scriptwriting stage.

The Hunt for Gollum is the next Lord of the Rings film. It follows Aragorn as he searches for Gollum on Gandalf’s behalf, before the events of The Fellowship of the Ring. Andy Serkis directs and also returns to play Gollum. The film is set for release on Dec. 17, 2027.

The Shadow of the Past takes place 14 years after Frodo leaves Middle-earth to travel to Valinor. Sam, Merry, and Pippin retrace the first steps of their legendary adventure. Stephen Colbert and Philippa Boyens are developing the script. Earlier reports said the film was in danger after the merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Jackson has debunked that rumor.
