PETA Criticizes Lizzo’s ‘Grotesque’ Ribs Campaign Following Her Exit from Veganism: ‘What Happened to You?’

PETA has taken a firm stance against Lizzo following the launch of her new promotional partnership with the restaurant chain Chili’s. The collaboration features the singer championing the brand’s iconic baby back ribs, a move that has sparked significant backlash given her former public commitment to veganism.
In a pointed social media post on Wednesday, the animal rights organization shared a video juxtaposing clips of the pop star’s new commercial with footage highlighting the inhumane treatment of pigs in the meat industry. Their caption didn’t mince words: “PIGS WANT THEIR RIBS BACK,” adding, “It’s about damn time you found a conscience, @lizzobeeating. The truth hurts, right?”
The nonprofit organization went on to criticize the singer’s use of a rib-shaped flute in the commercial, describing the portrayal of animal remains as a musical prop as “grotesque.”
Representatives for Lizzo have not yet issued a formal response to the controversy.
This development follows the singer’s recent shift in dietary transparency. In 2024, the Grammy-winning artist revealed she had transitioned away from a strictly vegan lifestyle. During an earlier interview with Billboard, Lizzo addressed the inevitability of this criticism, explaining that she felt it was crucial to be candid about her dietary changes long before a campaign like this emerged. “I wanted to clear the air back then so that you know where I’m coming from,” she noted, emphasizing that the Chili’s partnership highlights her “foodie side” rather than her previous focus on health advocacy.
Despite the vocal disapproval from activists, Lizzo appears to be embracing her current era, sharing lighthearted content on TikTok featuring the Chili’s menu items as she prepares for the upcoming June 5th release of her new album, Bitch.
