Caleb Flynn, a former American Idol contestant convicted of murdering his wife, Ashley Flynn, received a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

The musical pastor received his sentence in court on Monday (Oct. 5). The ruling arrived six days after an Ohio court found him guilty of all charges, which included aggravated murder, multiple counts of murder, felonious assault, and tampering with evidence related to the death of Ashley, with whom he shares two young daughters. He received the maximum possible sentence for the crime.

Additionally, Caleb received two mandatory three-year prison terms for gun specifications.

Caleb pleaded not guilty prior to the trial. When given the opportunity on Monday to speak for the first time during the court proceedings, he reasserted his innocence regarding Ashley’s death. However, he apologized to his former in-laws for being unfaithful to his wife and for the awful and hurtful remarks he made about her in text messages to Alleigha Botner. Caleb had an affair with Botner for 1.5 years and frequently discussed wanting Ashley to die.

Correspondence between the church leader and Botner served as a central component of the prosecution’s case for establishing motive. Botner was 21 when she met Caleb and is now 24, having delivered hours of testimony during the trial. In May 2025, Caleb texted Botner regarding Ashley, according to CNN: “If I could literally kill her and not go to hell, I would do it in a heartbeat. That’s how dark and hateful I feel.”

Evidence presented at trial also showed that on Feb. 15, Caleb told Botner he planned to inform Ashley the following day that he was leaving her. Instead, the next day was Ashley’s last. First responders arrived at the family home in Tipp County and found her dead from a gunshot wound. Caleb had dialed 911 at the time and reported that an intruder had broken into the residence and killed Ashley.

Caleb stood before the court on Monday wearing an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, visibly shaking and shedding heavy tears. Between his remarks and the judge reading the sentence, friends and family of Ashley read victim impact statements aloud, which included two letters written by the Flynn daughters, who were not present.

Matt Keyt, who currently raises the girls alongside his wife and Ashley’s sister Kayla, read the letter written by Caleb’s daughter Ava: “Dear Daddy, I don’t even know where to start. How could you do such a thing? I looked up to you. I loved you with all of my heart, and then you lied to everyone. Mommy was the perfect person — the absolute perfect person. What did she ever do to make you hate her so much?”

Ashley’s mother, Jill, read a letter from Alyssa Flynn directed at her father, which stated: “By the way, I don’t plan on coming to see you.”

Caleb competed during the 12th season of American Idol in 2013. He reached the televised judges’ auditions but did not advance to the main competition. “I love to sing, so that’s why I auditioned — and my wife kind of nudged me a little bit too,” he stated in his “Road to Hollywood” interview at the time. “I love my wife more than anything. She is very, very pretty.”
