Chrissie Hynde has shared positive thoughts on Taylor Swift and her new song “Cleveland!,” a track addressing critics while focusing on the pop star’s relationship.
In an Instagram post on Friday, Oct. 2, The Pretenders frontwoman discussed Swift’s Ohio-themed track from The Life of a Showgirl: The Encore. Hynde wrote that she was thrilled to hear the song and noted that Swift stays on the cutting edge, adding that Swift might be the only person in history to write a song about Cleveland.
Hynde noted that she also commemorated Cleveland on her first album in the song “Precious,” joking that Swift might be emulating her career, though she suspected it had more to do with Swift’s husband and Cleveland native Travis Kelce.
“Cleveland!” centers on Swift’s relationship with Kelce, a Kansas City Chiefs tight end born and raised in Cleveland Heights. The lyrics find the 14-time Grammy winner singing about exploring the city with him while blocking out external opinions. The music video features home footage of the couple driving together as Kelce gives Swift a tour.
The track is one of four new songs released at the end of September on the Showgirl deluxe edition, which returned to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for its 13th non-consecutive week on the Oct. 10-dated chart. Kelce called the song “a banger” on a recent episode of his New Heights podcast.
Hynde concluded by tipping her hat to Swift for commemorating Akron’s main competition, Cleveland, Ohio, and mentioned she has many memories of adventures in the town.
