PCSX2 2.8.0 Released With Major PS2 Emulation Upgrades
The PCSX2 emulator has received a major update featuring numerous graphical fixes and performance improvements, with frame rates in Gran Turismo 4 increasing up to fourfold in certain cases.
The PlayStation 2 emulator remained on version 2.6.x for over six months before the developers unexpectedly released this large update. PS2 emulation remains complex due to the specific architecture of the Graphics Synthesizer (GS). Essentially, it operated as a rapid rasterizer, while the console’s CPU handled geometry and lighting.
Due to these architectural traits, many games launched with graphical glitches and performance issues. For example, Black lacked the background beneath the menu text, and in Armored Core 2, VRAM texture overwrite errors caused visual artifacts for years.
The developers stated that PCSX2 2.8.0 fixes at least several dozen GS emulation issues and noticeably boosts performance, with frame rate gains reaching up to four times in Gran Turismo 4.

The interface has also been updated to include OSD settings, a cover downloader in Big Picture mode, and refreshed RetroAchievements integration.
