Original Final Fantasy VII sales surpass 15.5 million copies

Square Enix’s seminal masterpiece, Final Fantasy VII, has officially surpassed the 15.5 million unit milestone, further cementing its legacy as one of the franchise’s most commercially dominant entries. Since its groundbreaking debut in 1997, the game has seen its sales figures climb steadily, bolstered by a relentless cycle of re-releases and multi-platform availability.

Following a mid-2025 update that cited 15.1 million units, the title has moved an additional 400,000 copies, underscoring the enduring appeal of this RPG classic. Of the total cumulative sales, approximately 10 million units are attributed to its original run on the PlayStation 1.

The game’s reach has expanded significantly over the years, appearing on PC, iOS, Android, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, with reports suggesting its inclusion as a bonus for the Switch 2. These modern ports serve as a vital bridge, introducing the iconic narrative to a new generation while providing a nostalgic homecoming for long-time fans.

As of early 2026, the Final Fantasy series as a whole has eclipsed 207 million lifetime sales. Within this storied catalog, the 1997 original remains the benchmark of success: Final Fantasy XV stands at 10.3 million, Final Fantasy XVI has reached roughly 3.8 million, and the Final Fantasy VII Remake has cleared the 7 million mark.
