Order of the Sinking Star Is Selling Better Than The Witness, Jonathan Blow Explains Earnings Caveat
Order of the Sinking Star, the new puzzle game from Braid and The Witness creator Jonathan Blow, sold 45% better on Steam in its first week than The Witness did. That does not mean the developer will earn more.
The game took about 10 years to develop, and the games industry changed a great deal over that time. Despite the successful launch, it is too early to expect significantly higher revenue.
Blow noted that The Witness cost $40, while Order of the Sinking Star sells for $30, which is 25% less. That comparison does not account for bundle discounts or inflation. As a result, the new game needs to sell more copies to reach comparable financial results.
Regardless, it looks like the game is doing at least as well as The Witness from a financial standpoint, and it may even end up doing slightly better, depending on how its sales develop from here.
He also noted that Steam promotes well-selling games on its own, which could support sales going forward.
Blow added:
Thank you all for supporting our game, and I’m glad you’re having a good time with it!
