One of the largest free retro game archives Myrient is closing amid a hardware crisis
“To put it simply, I can no longer afford the costs associated with maintaining the site.”
The founder of Myrient has officially announced the upcoming closure of the project. The platform is scheduled to cease operations on March 31, 2026. Until then, the resource will remain fully functional, giving users ample time to archive any content they require.
This decision stems from a combination of challenges, the most significant being a lack of sufficient funding exacerbated by the ongoing “hardware crisis.”
While traffic has surged over the past year, donations have unfortunately remained stagnant. To keep the project afloat, the owner has been personally covering a monthly deficit of over $6,000—a financial model that has proven to be unsustainable in the long term.
Since September, the cost of hardware has skyrocketed and continues to rise, driven by the massive demand from AI-focused data centers. This has led to a substantial increase in hosting overheads. The need for essential server upgrades, along with expanded storage and caching infrastructure, only added to the financial strain. Given the existing monthly shortfall, absorbing these new expenses has become an impossible task.
