More than four years after intense public scrutiny surrounding her romance with Harry Styles upended her personal life, Olivia Wilde is finally pulling back the curtain on what that turbulent period was truly like behind closed doors.

During a candid conversation on the June 17 episode of Call Her Daddy, the director and actress addressed the relentless criticism she endured after beginning a relationship with the British pop star during the production of her 2022 film, Don’t Worry Darling. Reflecting on the months of tabloid speculation, she remarked, “I’ve never felt more disconnected from the person the media was portraying. I’d read these stories and wonder, ‘Who are they talking about? Who is that woman?’”

Wilde pushed back against the narrative that surrounded their relationship, noting how often false reports were treated as undeniable facts. She specifically addressed the harsh judgment she faced regarding her age and alleged neglect of her children—claims she notes were entirely baseless given her existing custody arrangement with former partner Jason Sudeikis. “My private life was actually very far from the chaos portrayed; it was, in reality, quite wholesome and sweet,” she told host Alex Cooper.

“It’s hard to fully grasp why the backlash was so intense,” she admitted. “I think the parasocial connection fans have with [Styles] is incredibly powerful, and he carries that weight with grace. It is a massive responsibility for any artist.”

She also touched on the vitriol she faced simply for living her life. “It was as if our happiness was a trigger for some people,” she shared. “I’d attend his concerts to support him, and the reaction would be, ‘How could she?’”

Though Wilde and Styles ended their two-year relationship in late 2022, they largely succeeded in maintaining a low profile despite the surrounding frenzy. Both previously spoke out about the toxicity directed toward those close to the singer, with Wilde emphasizing that the hateful behavior displayed by some corners of the internet stood in stark contrast to the values Styles promotes.

Looking back, Wilde remembers their time together with genuine fondness. “We shared a beautiful, lovely, and incredibly domestic relationship,” she reflected. “We managed to exist in this little bubble, and it was something of a miracle that we kept that space protected from the judgment outside.”

Today, both stars have moved forward. Styles continues to support his latest musical projects, while Wilde remains dedicated to her filmmaking career, with her latest project, The Invite, arriving in theaters on June 26.
