Olivia Rodrigo Calls New Album a ‘Time Capsule of a Relationship’ in Letter to Fans

Olivia Rodrigo is embracing the release of her latest studio album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, with pure excitement. Shortly after the project dropped, the pop icon took to social media to share her gratitude, telling fans exactly how much it means to finally have these songs out in the world.

“I hold this album very close to my heart,” Rodrigo shared in a heartfelt Instagram post on Friday, June 12. “This record serves as a sonic time capsule, preserving the highs and lows of a specific relationship. It was my way of exploring love from every angle—navigating the hope and the inevitable heartbreak, the chaotic moments, and the sudden clarity that comes after things fall apart.”

Following the massive success of her previous chart-toppers—her 2021 debut Sour and the 2023 follow-up Guts—Rodrigo’s new 13-track collection dives deep into a complex emotional landscape. The album begins on a high note with the Hot 100 hit “Drop Dead,” gradually transitioning from the euphoria of new romance into the anxiety and eventual dissolution of a relationship.

“It might sound a bit sentimental, but I feel incredibly fortunate to share this journey with all of you,” she added, extending her appreciation to collaborator Dan Nigro and her team at Interscope. “The thought of listeners inviting these songs into their lives is the greatest honor I could ask for.”

In addition to the album launch, Rodrigo celebrated release day with a debut live performance of “Stupid Song” on Jimmy Kimmel Live, accompanied by the premiere of its official music video.

Fans eager to catch the new material live won’t have to wait long; the singer is currently preparing to embark on her “Unraveled Tour,” which spans from this September through next May.
