No One Asked, but They Released It Anyway: Highguard Receives Final Update Ahead of March 12 Server Shutdown
Creative Director Jason McCord revealed that the remaining development crew spearheaded this final update of their own volition.
Wildlight Entertainment has deployed the concluding patch for its hero shooter, Highguard, serving as the title’s final content drop before its servers are permanently deactivated on March 12.
McCord expressed deep appreciation for the small team that volunteered their time and worked overtime to ensure these features reached the community before the game’s sunset.
This ultimate update introduces several substantial additions to the experience:
- A new Guardian named Koldo—a wandering spirit entombed within a suit of heavy armor.
- The Switchback, a unique long-barreled shotgun featuring hybrid mechanics. When fired from the hip, it functions as a traditional scattergun; however, aiming down sights transforms it into a precision sniper rifle, allowing for both rapid double-taps and calculated long-range shots.
- A comprehensive skill tree, a feature absent at the game’s initial launch. The progression system is divided into four distinct branches tailored to various tactical playstyles.
McCord candidly acknowledged that many elements of the update involved “necessary compromises.” Koldo is missing certain cosmetic skins, emotes, and situational audio cues, while the skill tree did not undergo the exhaustive iteration and refinement phases typically expected in a standard development cycle.
