Following the unexpected departure of industry stalwarts Phil Spencer and Sarah Bond, the newly appointed CEO of Xbox, Asha Sharma, has officially signaled the dawn of a new era. In her first major move as leader, Sharma has unveiled the codename for the brand’s highly anticipated next-generation hardware: Project Helix.
In a recent communication shared via social media, Sharma detailed her introductory meetings with the internal Xbox development teams to discuss the roadmap for Project Helix. According to the CEO, this upcoming console is being engineered to set new benchmarks in computational prowess, offering a unified experience that seamlessly bridges the gap between dedicated console play and PC gaming. Sharma reiterated her personal pledge to facilitate “the return of Xbox” and confirmed her attendance at next week’s Game Developers Conference (GDC) to finalize hardware strategies with global partners.

Despite the turbulent shifts in the gaming landscape, Microsoft’s commitment to physical hardware has remained a cornerstone of its strategy. This focus was previously underscored in 2024 when leadership assured employees that console development was far from over. Furthermore, a multi-year technical alliance with AMD was established last year to ensure their future silicon remains at the cutting edge of the industry.
The transition to Sharma’s leadership marks a significant pivot for the company. Formerly the head of Microsoft’s CoreAI division, Sharma stepped into the executive role following the dual exit of Spencer and Bond. To bolster the gaming-specific expertise at the top, long-time veteran Matt Booty has been elevated to Chief Content Officer, working in tandem with Sharma to oversee the brand’s creative output.
While some fans expressed apprehension regarding Sharma’s background in artificial intelligence, she has been proactive in addressing these concerns. In a memo to staff, she emphasized that technology should empower creators rather than replace them, stating, “Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us.”
As the industry looks toward Project Helix, the current Xbox ecosystem continues to expand with a robust 2026 lineup. High-profile titles on the horizon include the reimagined Halo: Campaign Evolved, Playground Games’ Forza Horizon 6, and the long-awaited return of Fable. Additionally, players can look forward to Double Fine’s unique pottery-based brawler, Kiln, and an intense deep-dive into Gears of War: E-Day.
