Ryu Ga Gotoku Studios is developing the next Virtua Fighter. Producer Riichiro Yamada told in an interview that the studio’s objective is for the game to vie for a Game of the Year nomination while remaining accessible to the widest possible audience.
Naturally, our aim is to deliver a title worthy of a “Game of the Year” nomination. Much like the original Virtua Fighter, we want to build an experience that goes beyond the conventional confines of the fighting genre.
He stressed that fighting games are often seen as niche, but Virtua Fighter’s approachable learning curve is one of its key strengths.
Yamada also mentioned that to achieve this they may introduce new mechanics and remove others:
If you overload the game with features, it becomes needlessly complicated. That’s why, for the new Virtua Fighter, we plan to experiment by pruning some systems and adding fresh ones.
Among the planned additions is an “Uprising” mode, which Yamada says will provide “dynamic opportunities to shift tempo.”
The game is being developed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S. A release date has not yet been announced.
