New Nintendo Release Officially Set to Compete with GTA 6 on Nov. 12

On November 19, following years of immense anticipation, Grand Theft Auto 6 will finally hit store shelves. You can safely bet that countless employees will mysteriously fall ill that day—if not for the entire week—while others wisely locked in their vacation time months ago. This launch is shaping up to be a monumental cultural event, prompting savvy game publishers to meticulously adjust their own release schedules to steer clear of the chaos.

Yet, Nintendo appears entirely unfazed. The company has lined up a fresh title, locking it into position just a week before Rockstar’s juggernaut makes landfall. In a rather bold move, Nintendo is pitting Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Dandori Academy directly against GTA 6 on November 12. It’s quite a mouthful of a title, and undoubtedly one that Rockstar never saw coming.

Originally launched on the Nintendo Switch on July 21, 2023—itself following a remarkably protracted development cycle, with Shigeru Miyamoto hinting it was nearly finished as far back as 2015—Pikmin 4 represents the fourth installment in a franchise that has never quite achieved the mainstream superstar status of Super Mario or The Legend of Zelda. Even so, the charming exploits of a stranded astronaut and his peculiar botanical companions have steadily cultivated a deeply dedicated fanbase.

When Pikmin 4 first dropped and marooned Captain Olimar on yet another uncanny, Earth-like terrain, returning enthusiasts gladly embraced the familiar formula. As we noted in our official Polygon review, the game “makes the real world seem more wondrous than it did before.” While occasional moments of frustration might arise, the experience overflows with heartwarming details so potent that stepping away for a breather leaves you entirely forgetting whatever minor obstacles you just faced. Ultimately, the prevailing emotion the journey inspires is pure joy.

Although I haven’t yet had the opportunity to dive into Grand Theft Auto 6, it’s a safe bet that its creators are aiming to evoke a broader spectrum of feelings than mere happiness. This fundamental difference in creative philosophy likely explains why Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition is intentionally arriving right on the doorstep of what promises to be the biggest release of the decade. Simply put, these two publishers are targeting entirely different states of mind.

To celebrate its triumphant return, Pikmin 4: Nintendo Switch 2 Edition delivers fresh enhancements, living up to its expanded moniker. Upgrades for the new hardware include polished visual fidelity alongside the ability to issue direct voice commands to Oatchi, the endearing space canine introduced in the adventure. Players can also tackle a series of rigorous “exams” housed within Dandori Academy. Finally, GameShare functionality allows you to challenge friends to Dandori Battles, even if they don’t own a personal copy of the game.

If you already own Pikmin 4 on the original Nintendo Switch, you won’t be forced to repurchase the entire game at full price to access these enhancements. Instead, a modest $9.99 upgrade path is available—a brilliantly pragmatic marketing choice. Veterans of the original release can drop a mere ten dollars to experience the adventure anew with all its polished additions. Once we jump back in, many of us will inevitably drag our friends into frantic Dandori Battles. A few heated competitive matches might even persuade them to invest the full $70 so they can sharpen their tactics when we aren’t around to outwit them.

When Grand Theft Auto 6 finally debuts on November 19, millions will undoubtedly be immersed in it—or perhaps revisiting Hyrule via The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, which arrives on November 5, two weeks prior to Rockstar’s blockbuster. For everyone else, Pikmin 4 stands ready with an extra dose of strategic mastery. Viewed through this lens, a release strategy that initially seemed audacious is actually remarkably shrewd.
