New HBO Big Bang Theory Spinoff Revealed as Comedic Take on Apple TV Sci-Fi Series

The third installment in The Big Bang Theory franchise takes a bold, unexpected turn. This spinoff weaves together the high-concept sci-fi DNA of Dark Matter and The Matrix with the gritty, post-apocalyptic tension of The Walking Dead. Curiously, the debut trailer even appears to feature a cameo from iconic Batman antagonist Mr. Freeze.

HBO Max’s Stuart Fails to Save the Universe centers on The Big Bang Theory favorite Stuart Bloom (Kevin Sussman). In this multiversal romp, the comic book store owner finds himself thrust into a high-stakes mission after he accidentally destroys a device engineered by Sheldon and Leonard, triggering an existential crisis across reality.

Stuart isn’t venturing into the unknown alone; he is joined by his girlfriend, Denise (Lauren Lapkus), fellow geologist Bert (Brian Posehn), and the abrasive, self-proclaimed genius Barry Kripke (John Ross Bowie). The trailer showcases a chaotic journey through fractured realities, including worlds overrun by monstrous insects, zombie-infested landscapes, and a grim nod to the human-battery pods of The Matrix. Despite the grand scope, the title makes one thing clear: Stuart is definitely not the “Chosen One.” With its heavy reliance on DC Comics lore and Matrix-inspired visuals, the show leans heavily into Warner Bros.’ penchant for corporate synergy.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stands out as the most experimental chapter of The Big Bang Theory universe to date, diverging significantly from the grounded approach of Young Sheldon and Georgie and Mandy’s First Marriage. While it may not reach the dark, cerebral depths of Apple TV’s Dark Matter, the production clearly aims for a higher ambition, backed by a robust visual effects budget.

Produced by Chuck Lorre Productions, this series is the creative brainchild of Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, who serve as writers and executive producers.

Stuart Fails to Save the Universe premieres on HBO Max on Thursday, July 23.
