Netflix Releases New Trailer for Sea Monster Thriller Below
Netflix has built a solid reputation for horror limited series. Projects range from creepy new homes and sleepy island communities to more complex supernatural narratives. The Watcher turned an idyllic property into a nightmare, while Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House and Midnight Mass blended supernatural scares with family drama.
Now, Netflix is heading to a much wetter location for its next horror thriller.
A new six-episode limited series plunges viewers into a small Newfoundland fishing town. Something terrifying lurks beneath the surface. The narrative features mysterious deaths, a strange iceberg, family secrets, and an unidentified sea creature.
The series is called Below. Netflix released the official trailer ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. All six episodes arrive on Netflix on Oct. 8.
What is Below about?
Below follows Calvin Penney, a stubborn fisherman with a big heart played by Josh Hartnett from Oppenheimer and Trap. Calvin lives in a small Newfoundland town with his family. He has spent decades haunted by the mysterious death of his father. The past comes rushing back when an unidentified sea creature begins terrorizing the community.
Things escalate when a massive iceberg drifts into the harbor. Despite warnings to stay away, local boats head out to investigate. The crews discover that whatever lurks beneath the water is far more dangerous than expected. As the town descends into chaos, Calvin teams up with Fonda Howander, a visiting marine researcher played by Mackenzie Davis from Station Eleven and Speak No Evil. Together, they attempt to figure out what they face and protect Calvin’s family.

The family includes Calvin’s son Wade Penney, played by Charlie Heaton from Stranger Things and The New Mutants, who gets caught up in the mystery. The trailer suggests the creature connects to the death of Calvin’s father. This implies that whatever haunts the town has lurked beneath the surface for decades.

Jesse McKeown created the series. His previous credits include The Umbrella Academy and The Sinner. Below mixes supernatural horror, local mythology, family drama, and small-town suspense. The production filmed on location in Newfoundland and Labrador, making the isolated coastal setting integral to the story.
The trailer keeps the creature mostly hidden while promising plenty of ocean chaos.
