Netflix and Kyoto Animation Partner to Push the Frontiers of Anime with New Series

In the wake of Scott Westerfeld’s Leviathan adaptation, Netflix is doubling down on steampunk-inspired alternate histories with the upcoming anime Sparks of Tomorrow. The series is produced by the visionary Kyoto Animation, the prestigious studio behind landmark titles such as Violet Evergarden, Clannad, and K-On!.

Transporting viewers to a reimagined early 20th-century Kyoto where steam remains the lifeblood of civilization, the story follows Kihachi Sakamoto. Kihachi is a young man haunted by the loss of his brother and their abandoned aspirations for an “Age of Electricity.” His path intersects with Inako Momokawa, a young woman burdened by grief and secrets regarding her late mother. Together, they set out to uncover the mysteries of the “20th Century Electrical Catalog,” a legendary manuscript that offers a window into the future they both desire. As Netflix describes in their official synopsis, the two protagonists must confront their personal shadows to forge a path toward a new era.

The series is based on the light novel 20 Seiki Denki Mokuroku by Hiro Yuki, published under Kyoto Animation’s own KA Esuma Bunko imprint. Minoru Ota (City the Animation) serves as director, with Tatsuhiko Urahata managing series composition. The artistic direction features character designs and chief animation supervision by Kohei Okamura, world-building by Takaaki Suzuki, and a musical score by Hitomi Koto. The voice cast is led by Yuma Uchida as Kihachi Sakamoto and Sora Amamiya as Inako Momokawa.

Kyoto Animation, affectionately known as KyoAni, is celebrated within the industry for two distinct pillars: its unparalleled production quality and its ethical treatment of animators—a rarity in a field often criticized for overwork. By employing staff on a salaried basis rather than relying on the typical freelance model, KyoAni fosters a sustainable creative environment that prioritizes artistry over speed. This meticulous, in-house approach to talent development is a model that other industry leaders, including MAPPA’s Hiroya Hasegawa, have expressed a desire to integrate into their own operations.

Netflix’s collaboration with KyoAni underscores its commitment to high-caliber animation as a cornerstone of its content strategy. Following their recent long-term partnership with MAPPA, securing a project described as a “new frontier” for a studio with KyoAni’s flawless reputation further cements Netflix’s position as a major player in the global anime market.

Sparks of Tomorrow is scheduled to debut globally on Netflix this July.
