Nearly 90% of Windows Games Run on Linux

For many years, gaming on Linux was seen as experimental — a playground for hobbyists and power users. Even with notable improvements to the platform in recent times, it still carries a reputation for being fiddly and less user-friendly for gamers.

However, the landscape has shifted dramatically. Much of the credit goes to Proton and WINE, and the Steam Deck has also played a major part. According to recent data, nearly 90% of Windows games can now be launched on Linux. This is particularly significant given ongoing security concerns around Windows 10 and the fact that many users are either unable or unwilling to migrate to Windows 11.

Of course, it’s not without flaws. Several prominent multiplayer titles still lack Linux support, and that remains a limitation to accept for now.

Still, for fans of single-player adventures and indie titles, Linux is more viable today than ever before — and the outlook suggests continued improvement over time.
