“Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew” Trailer Gets 481.3 Million Views in First Week, WaveMetrix Data Shows, and Film Website Briefly Crashes
The first trailer for Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew drew 481.3 million views across platforms in seven days. Netflix has placed a big bet on the film, which has a budget approaching $300 million.
According to WaveMetrix data cited by Deadline, that is more than double the result of Greta Gerwig’s previous film, Barbie, whose trailer collected 240 million views in the same period.
The new adaptation also passed the trailers for Wonka, with 237.2 million views, and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, with 281.6 million. Interest was high enough that the official website, NarniaFilm.com, briefly went down because of the surge in visitors.
The trailer drew extra attention for its use of Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven.” The band had never before allowed the song to be used in a film or its promotional materials. According to Gerwig, the musicians made an exception because they love the work of C.S. Lewis and saw in the story themes of spiritual searching that resonate with them:
“For me, this song was the right way to introduce the film to the world. But they had never allowed it to be used in anything like this before, so I was very moved that they agreed. They agreed because they saw the very essence of this story in the film. They also love Clive Lewis and have great respect for his work.”
The Magician’s Nephew tells the story of how Narnia came to be. David McKenna and Beatrice Campbell play the lead roles. The cast also includes Emma Mackey, Daniel Craig, Carey Mulligan and Ciarán Hinds. Meryl Streep voices the lion Aslan.
The international theatrical release begins on February 12, 2027, and the film arrives on Netflix on April 2.
