Hacker Breaks PS5 Firmware to Run GTA VI, Sony Releases System Update Soon After
Tech enthusiasts may want to hold off on celebrating their successes.
A post by a user named gezine_dev recently went viral on social media. The hacker said they had found a vulnerability in the PlayStation 5 security system and demonstrated it in action.
Although this is not a full-fledged hack, news of a “hack” of firmware 14.10.00, which is required to run the upcoming Grand Theft Auto VI, spread quickly through the gaming community.
Those reports appear to have reached Sony. Soon after gezine_dev published the post, the developers announced the release of a new PlayStation 5 firmware version.
The new PlayStation 5 firmware is called “26.07-14.20.00.” According to the official patch notes, the update includes nothing related to system security:
We improved messages and usability on some screens.
Tech enthusiasts, however, believe Sony introduced improvements that close potential loopholes for further firmware hacking. The company has released updates with hidden security changes in the past.
Grand Theft Auto VI is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
