The highly anticipated sequel to the Mortal Kombat film adaptation pulled in $63 million worldwide during its opening weekend.
However, this performance fell short of unseating the current box office juggernaut, the fashion-forward comedy The Devil Wears Prada 2, which commanded an impressive $118.8 million in its second week.
Despite a modest debut, Mortal Kombat 2 has already set a new benchmark for the franchise, outperforming both the 1995 original and the 2021 reboot. Produced by Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema on an $80 million budget, the film marks a significant milestone for the series.
Meanwhile, The Devil Wears Prada 2 not only maintained its top position but has also eclipsed the total earnings of its 2006 predecessor. The sequel has now amassed a global total of $433.2 million, comfortably surpassing the $326.5 million lifetime gross of the original film.
