Mortal Kombat 2 Takes an Unconventional Approach to Its Sequel Setup

Much like its 2021 live-action predecessor, Mortal Kombat 2 concludes with a slate of unresolved mysteries. The film leans heavily into brutal character departures—an essential hallmark for a franchise defined by its iconic, visceral fatalities. Yet, with the definitive tournament concluded and Earthrealm’s defenders securing a hard-fought victory, the inevitable question arises: where does the cinematic franchise venture from here?

Producer Todd Garner has dropped heavy hints that a third installment is currently in the works, with potential spinoffs also under consideration, though these plans remain contingent on the box-office performance of Mortal Kombat 2.

With that in mind, let’s unpack what the final scenes signify for the future of the series, what creators have disclosed regarding a sequel, and address that burning question regarding the credits.

Does Mortal Kombat 2 feature a mid-credits sequence?

Interestingly, it does not. The film concludes with Kitana established as the ruler of Edenia, while the remaining heroes—including Sonya Blade, Johnny Cage, Baraka, Kano, and Raiden—embark on a quest to resurrect their fallen comrades, such as Jax, Cole Young, and Kung Lao.

The team is currently in possession of the necromancer Quan Chi, whose true allegiance remains ambiguous. Meanwhile, Liu Kang, having fully embraced his Fire God persona, is committed to retrieving Kung Lao from the Netherrealm. While Scorpion seems to have decisively neutralized his nemesis, it remains to be seen if the dark ninja is truly gone or if another warrior will claim the mantle of Sub-Zero.

There are no mid-credits teases hinting at future narrative arcs or upcoming characters for this cinematic universe. Instead, audiences are treated to a fresh arrangement of the classic “Techno Syndrome” theme paired with stylized graphics of the film’s combatants.

Does Mortal Kombat 2 have a post-credits scene?

Regrettably, there is no post-credits surprise. This follows the trend set by the 2021 original, but given the rich source material, fans might find it a missed opportunity to offer a tantalizing glimpse at future threats—like the return of Goro or a darker twist for the characters left behind.

Is a Mortal Kombat 3 confirmed?

During New York Comic Con 2025, screenwriter Jeremy Slater confirmed that Warner Bros. has commissioned him to pen the next chapter of the saga. Furthermore, Todd Garner has emphasized that the studio has ambitious plans for the brand, including the potential introduction of fan-favorite fighters like Rain—a character the production team is eager to showcase in a high-stakes combat sequence.

The cinematic potential is vast. Even with major antagonists like Shao Kahn and Goro sidelined, the franchise has a deep roster of villains such as Shinnok, Motaro, and Onaga available for future exploration. Director Simon McQuoid has merely scratched the surface; hopefully, the absence of a credits teaser is simply a stylistic choice rather than a signal that the journey of Earthrealm’s fighters is coming to a close.
