Initial box office figures for the Mortal Kombat sequel have surfaced online. The high-profile video game adaptation raked in $17 million domestically during its opening day.
With a production budget estimated at $80 million, the Warner Bros. and New Line Cinema action flick is projected to secure roughly $40 million during its North American debut weekend.
In this installment, the champions of Earthrealm, now joined by Johnny Cage (played by Karl Urban), must unite to thwart Shao Kahn’s tyrannical reign. The cast also features Jessica McNamee, Hiroyuki Sanada, Adeline Rudolph, and Tati Gabrielle, with Simon McQuoid returning to the director’s chair.
Critics have offered a generally favorable reception, with the film currently holding a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. For context, the original 2021 Mortal Kombat film concluded its entire theatrical run with a global total of $84 million.
