Monopoly on PC? Steam Controls 75% of the Market
A recent market study of the video game industry indicates that most publishers and studios believe Valve has established a monopoly in the PC space through its Steam platform.
The survey, titled “The State of PC Game Distribution” and conducted by Atomik Research, polled 306 industry executives across the United Kingdom and the United States. The majority of respondents acknowledged that Steam effectively dominates the PC market.
According to the findings, over 75% of participating companies’ revenues are generated via Steam, yet studios are actively pursuing alternative revenue streams on platforms such as the Epic Games Store, Xbox Games Store, GOG, and Itch.
About 80% of those surveyed already release—or plan to release—their titles on multiple storefronts rather than relying solely on Steam. Additionally, 72% regard Steam as a PC monopoly, prompting them to explore new opportunities and anticipate at least a 10% increase in revenue in the coming years.
