Michael Fassbender has established a distinct presence in science fiction. The actor played Magneto in Fox’s X-Men films and portrayed androids in 2017’s Alien: Covenant, a movie that director Ridley Scott stated could be getting a sequel sooner than later. Fassbender now returns to the genre for another major project.

Hope is a sci-fi thriller written and directed by South Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin. The plot follows a conflict between the remote Korean community of Hope Harbor and a swarm of attacking aliens. Fassbender and his real-life wife, Alicia Vikander, star as two of the extraterrestrial characters named Ma’veyyo and J’aur. Vikander previously appeared in Ex Machina and The Man From U.N.C.L.E. This project marks the couple’s first onscreen collaboration since their marriage in 2017. They originally met on the set of the 2016 film The Light Between Oceans.

Na Hong-jin previously directed 2008’s The Chaser and 2016’s The Wailing. The cast of Hope also features Taylor Russell as Ai’dovor, Cameron Britton as Va’migere, Hwang Jung-min as Ko Bum-seok, Zo In-sung as Ko Sung-ki, and Jung Ho-yeon as Im Sung-ae.

Hope premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it competed for the Palme d’Or. The top prize ultimately went to Fjord, which stars Sebastian Stan and Renate Reinsve. Even so, the premiere generated significant discussion. Early reviews described Hope as “a glorious genre romp” and “among the best — and funniest — action movies you have ever seen”.

Following its release in South Korea earlier in the summer, the film grossed $31.1 million at that box office. NEON manages U.S. distribution, organizing early screenings in formats like 4DX, Dolby, ScreenX, and D-Box across select cities. Playing in more than 1,500 theaters, Hope marks the widest domestic theatrical release for a Korean film since 2019’s Parasite. The movie earned $5 million during its first five days in theaters and holds a Certified Fresh 79% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 130 reviews.
