Mewgenics Composers Are ‘Dead Serious’ About a Theatrical Adaptation
Since its debut in early February, Mewgenics—the idiosyncratic feline-breeding tactics RPG—has emerged as a phenomenal breakout hit. It has captivated the community with its intricate strategy, nearly limitless ability synergies, and a hauntingly atmospheric score. During a recent call with streamer Dan Gheesling, developer Edmund McMillen shared that the title is already approaching the prestigious million-unit sales milestone. Amidst the celebration, McMillen also teased an unexpected trajectory for the franchise: the possibility of a Mewgenics musical.
This surge in popularity represents a triumphant conclusion to a development cycle spanning over a decade. Initially conceived during McMillen’s tenure with Team Meat, the project eventually shifted into a collaborative effort between the Binding of Isaac creator and Tyler Glaiel. The long-anticipated wait clearly fueled demand, as Mewgenics ascended to become the most-played roguelite on Steam within just seven days of its launch.
A viral TikTok clip from Gheesling captured the moment McMillen reflected on the game’s commercial scale. When asked if he envisioned massive stadium events for the title, the developer pivoted to a more artistic ambition. “This is what I care about,” McMillen explained, noting that his primary hope is for the game’s success to allow composers Matthias Bossi and Jon Evans to take their music on tour, or even adapt the experience into a full-scale musical production.
Bossi and Evans, the duo known as Ridiculon, are veteran collaborators of McMillen, having previously delivered the iconic soundtrack for The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. McMillen emphasized that the pair is “dead serious” about pursuing a theatrical adaptation. While the crossover between indie gaming and musical theater is a rarity, the surreal world of feline genetic experimentation and tactical combat provides an oddly perfect, avant-garde canvas for the stage.
