Mercy and Other Overwatch Veterans Get a Glow-Up in Season 2
A handful of Overwatch veterans, including Mercy and Reaper, have struggled to find their footing in the game’s evolving meta. Blizzard aims to rectify this by folding select abilities—previously restricted to temporary perks—directly into their permanent base kits. Alec Dawson, the game’s associate director, outlined these sweeping adjustments in a recent blog post, confirming that the initial rollout will debut with the launch of Season 2 on April 14.
Once the season commences, Mercy will benefit from a permanent “flash-heal” burst, providing her with more consistent survivability. Similarly, Reaper will enjoy the passive advantage of his long-range volley, and Pharah will see her mobility boosters become a standard feature, allowing her to maneuver fluidly while activating her ultimate. While Blizzard has hinted at forthcoming reworks for Roadhog, Lifeweaver, and Sombra, specific details regarding their mechanical shifts remain under wraps.
“Our objective is to ensure that every hero feels refined and purpose-built for the current state of Overwatch,” Dawson explained in his official update. “We are prioritizing the most impactful adjustments for those who need them most, ensuring our hero roster remains both competitive and engaging without cluttering their kits with unnecessary complexity.”
These proactive changes arrive as a welcome relief to players, as the current environment has proved particularly punishing for certain roles.
Since the healing adjustments introduced in Season 1, which reduce health regeneration for characters currently under fire, support heroes have faced an uphill battle. Mercy, in particular, has been forced into a narrow playstyle, dedicating all her focus to healing streams rather than utilizing her damage-boosting utility. Conversely, Reaper’s reliance on close-quarters combat has become increasingly dangerous in a landscape dominated by stuns and crowd control, while Pharah’s immobile ultimate has long been a precarious gamble—something even Blizzard poked fun at in recent limited-time voice lines.
While Blizzard is currently quiet on what new perks will replace the ones being integrated into these heroes’ kits, expectations for the upcoming season are high. Season 2 is also set to introduce Sierra, a new Damage-role hero, alongside native support for the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2.
