Activision Shuts Down Fan-Made Call of Duty Projects Featuring Black Ops 2 and Zombies Maps

Activision has successfully blocked fan-made Call of Duty projects that allowed users to play the shooter and its Zombies mode for free directly in web browsers.

Programmer Luckey Faraday reported on X that the publisher issued a DMCA takedown notice demanding the removal of the fan-made Call of Duty projects. As a result, the browser-based versions of the games stopped working.

The action targets two projects created using artificial intelligence. Claude of Duty: Vibe Slops II replicated Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 multiplayer with six bots on the Hijacked and Nuketown 2025 maps. The second project, Kino der Toten, allowed players to experience the Zombies mode map of the same name in solo play.

Both games used Three.js and AI agents for programming. However, the creators also utilized original maps, models, and animations from the PC versions of Activision’s games. Their status as non-profit fan projects did not protect them from copyright claims by the rights holder.

Faraday did not disclose the contents of the notice, and Activision has not yet commented on the situation. The browser versions and promotional posts for them were removed, although the Kino der Toten repository on GitHub remained accessible.

Previously, Take-Two also took legal action against the developer of a GTA 5 port for Nintendo Switch. Using AI to create a game does not grant the right to freely borrow outside assets.
