Maul’s Return in New Star Wars Series Could Finally Canonize a Fan-Favorite Sith Lord

Among the expansive roster of upcoming Star Wars projects currently in development—a lineup that remains largely undated save for The Mandalorian & Grogu and Starfighter—few titles carry as much weight as Maul: Shadow Lord.

While Lucasfilm Animation has kept fans in suspense regarding the official launch, we have long known the series was slated for a 2025 release. Expectations shifted when Marvel revealed a prequel comic tie-in arriving this March, leading many to assume the show would follow in the summer. However, the latest teaser trailer has officially narrowed the window: Maul: Shadow Lord will premiere on April 6.

Though narrative details are closely guarded, the footage confirms that the former Sith is occupied with expanding his criminal empire on a remote world far from the Empire’s reach. Most importantly for fans of the character’s vocal legacy, Sam Witwer returns once again to voice the titular anti-hero.

The high-octane trailer introduces a variety of new players, including Captain Brander Lawson, a character jumping from the pages of the Marvel comics to hunt Maul down. Perhaps most intriguing is the appearance of a pink Twi’lek Jedi. While her identity remains a mystery, she appears to be forming an uneasy alliance with Maul. Given his history of attempting to corrupt those around him, viewers are already speculating that she may fulfill the apprentice role George Lucas originally envisioned for the character Darth Talon.

While Maul’s ultimate fate was definitively depicted in Rebels, Disney and Lucasfilm continue to find narrative gold in his earlier years. Originally thought to have perished in 1999’s The Phantom Menace, the character has proven to be one of the franchise’s most resilient figures, anchoring major arcs in The Clone Wars and making a memorable live-action return in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

As the Shadow Lord finally steps into the spotlight for his own dedicated series, the Star Wars community is eager to see how this chapter bridges the gap in his dark Odyssey. We won’t have to wait long.
