Matt Reeves Just Dropped a Major Clue About The Batman 2’s Secret Supervillain

The Batman 2 is scheduled to begin production next spring. While the film’s antagonist remains unconfirmed, director Matt Reeves dropped intriguing clues during a red‑carpet conversation with MTV’s Josh Horowitz at the Emmy Awards — an event where Cristin Milioti received the Emmy for her work connected to the The Batman spinoff The Penguin.

Reeves explains that he and co-writer Mattson Tomlin immersed themselves in Batman comics and a wide range of films — not all set in Gotham — to shape the story they wanted to tell. Whereas the first movie concentrated on Batman carving out his place as a vigilante, the sequel will shift emphasis toward Bruce Wayne himself: the next villain, Reeves says, will probe Wayne’s history and personal life rather than acting solely as a straightforward external threat.

Reeves emphasized that choosing “the right” antagonist — one that exposes and unsettles Bruce Wayne on a personal level — guided their creative discussions, and he added that the direction they chose feels fresh for the cinematic landscape.

That clue narrows the field. It effectively rules out returning big-screen staples like the Joker (who briefly appeared via Barry Keoghan in the previous film) and Colin Farrell’s Penguin, and makes other marquee villains less likely contenders. It also appears to diminish the chance of characters already slated elsewhere in the expanding DC slate — for example, Clayface has been linked to a separate film within James Gunn’s DCU.

The first film already linked the Riddler’s origins to the Waynes, so Reeves has several narrative pathways available for a villain that targets Bruce personally. Two particularly apt choices stand out: Hugo Strange, a calculating psychologist who has in the past unraveled facets of Batman’s identity, and the Court of Owls — a clandestine cabal of Gotham’s elite with longstanding, secret ties to the Wayne family.

The Court of Owls, introduced in the 2012 story by Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo, is a relatively modern addition to Batman lore and may be unfamiliar to viewers who follow older or animated iterations. Reeves’ deep exploration of the comics, however, makes the Court a natural fit: the group’s blend of political power, secrecy, and personal connection to Wayne family history would dovetail neatly with a story focused on Bruce rather than simply on his alter ego.

Regardless of the antagonist Reeves ultimately selects, centering the sequel on Bruce Wayne offers Robert Pattinson an opportunity to broaden his portrayal and allows the film to lean more heavily into psychological mystery and intrigue. Fans will continue to speculate until The Batman 2 arrives on October 1, 2027.
