Matthew Patrick has been studying the franchise’s world since the first game arrived in 2014 and believes there’s nothing wrong with adjusting the lore to fit the format.

Matthew Patrick, better known as MatPat, revealed that the sequel to Five Nights at Freddy’s will significantly deviate from the games’ canon. He voices Toy Bonnie in the upcoming film, and he says the creators are intentionally reassembling the timeline and events to make FNAF’s complex mythology work for a movie.

In an interview with DiscussingFilm, MatPat pointed out that capturing the spirit of the original is more important for the film than rigidly following its convoluted chronology.

“If no one knows the lore, does it even exist? FNAF’s lore is always shifting. The books differ somewhat from the films, and the films don’t always match the games. The medium ultimately shapes how the story evolves. I think they’ve done a great job preserving the core of the original while adapting it for cinema.”

The first film’s ending already diverged from established canon, altering aspects of William Afton’s death. The sequel will push changes further: animatronics are said to roam the city freely, and Mike will return to face them. Patrick believes fans are used to the franchise existing in multiple, evolving versions.

The premiere of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set for December 5, 2025.
