Marvel’s Wolverine Secret Ending Officially Sets Up New X-Men Game

Despite the various shortcomings found throughout Marvel’s Wolverine, the narrative’s broader ramifications for die-hard Marvel enthusiasts certainly aren’t among them. While players less familiar with the official canon might find that the plot takes a while to truly hook them, veteran X-Men fans will immediately recognize iconic figures like Bolivar Trask, Nathaniel Essex, and Omega Red during the opening mission, signaling that they are in for an exceptionally faithful experience.

Having reached the game’s conclusion and experienced both the ending and its post-credits sequence, it is evident that Logan’s journey is far from finished. Although the primary plot initially appears to focus on several concurrent threads—including Nathaniel Essex’s gradual descent into villainy as he transforms into Mister Sinister—one looming presence persistently haunts our fierce protagonist’s mind: Apocalypse.

To begin with, watch the final cinematic sequence from Marvel’s Wolverine below, which plays out just moments before the credits roll:

This dramatic sequence unfolds immediately after Wolverine defeats both Nathaniel Essex and Master Mold—the colossal Sentinel wreaking havoc across Tokyo while hunting for dormant mutants. The fierce battle concludes when Jean Grey transforms into the Phoenix and directly confronts Apocalypse, asking the legendary adversary if he remembers her. This is followed by a quiet, reflective moment featuring Logan and Jean on a farm, where she reminisces about the time they previously spent living together.

As the conclusion progresses, Callisto inquires whether Jean intends to track down Sabretooth, Wolverine’s complicated former friend and rival. Jean declines, noting that he will eventually reappear if he is still breathing. She also implies that she and Logan share a much deeper, more extensive history than the main narrative lets on, telling Callisto, “You don’t understand how many times I’ve done this with him.”

The next pivotal exchange occurs when Logan appears, offering an apology for still struggling to piece together his forgotten past. He expresses his belief that Jean and her allies “are gonna do a lotta good here,” prompting a telling response from Jean that strongly hints at future downloadable content or a sequel: “It’s not here I’m worried about. All these new mutants are going to wake up to a world that hates them. For something they had no part in. Who’s gonna help them?”

Logan subsequently explains that he cannot stay, as he must uncover the truth about his former identity—and if Apocalypse holds the answers… He trails off mid-sentence, leaving no doubt that he intends to hunt the villain down. Following a brief parting exchange, Callisto returns to enlist Jean Grey’s assistance.

Could this be foreshadowing a spin-off title centered around Jean Grey as the protagonist? Just before the credits roll, she agrees to aid Callisto, and with Logan departing to pursue Apocalypse, she appears poised to take center stage.

However, the surprises do not end there; take a look at the post-credits scene below:

As it turns out, Sabretooth survived being impaled on a food vendor’s cart and is actively tracking down Apocalypse. The post-credits scene depicts him stepping into a shadowy crypt while Apocalypse’s voice echoes inside his mind. Victor stumbles upon a dust-covered Helix Engine, and as he inspects the machinery, an ominous silhouette with glowing blue eyes towers over him. “The board has been set,” Apocalypse tells him. “The pieces are in play. Death’s turn is over… Now is the time… For War.”

A central revelation of Logan’s journey in Marvel’s Wolverine is that, in a forgotten past life, he served as Death—one of Apocalypse’s Horsemen. However, thanks to Jean Grey (and potentially Nathaniel Essex’s tampering), he managed to break free from that servitude. Now, it appears Sabretooth is destined to step into the role of War, becoming Apocalypse’s newest Horseman.

There is also a second post-credits sequence available to players who complete every optional nightmare trial and earn at least a bronze ranking in each. Rather than a traditional cinematic cutscene, this unlocks a brief, playable mission titled “Home.” The sequence consists simply of Logan strolling through the serene Canadian countryside near his and Jean’s farm while she shares further recollections of their shared history. While it offers very few clues regarding a potential sequel, it provides meaningful emotional depth to their relationship.

Thanks to a massive internal leak from Insomniac Games back in 2023, fans have known for quite some time that the studio has been developing an ambitious new X-Men project. At the time of the breach, the title was penciled in for a Fall 2030 release window. Given that nearly three years have passed since the leak—which also incorrectly projected a 2025 launch for Marvel’s Venom—it is clear these timelines are subject to change. Nevertheless, if the project remains in active development, it will almost certainly serve as the vehicle that continues this Apocalypse-centric storyline.

It is increasingly apparent that Insomniac and Marvel envision this as a sprawling, multi-game epic. Even if Marvel’s Wolverine has received a somewhat polarized reception, the development team remains exceptionally talented at building immersive superhero worlds. While anything can happen between now and the eventual release of the leaked X-Men title, this game lays a sturdy foundation for future sequels, character spin-offs, and expansions.
