Marvel Rivals Black Widow Mains at Breaking Point After Nerfs to Already Weak Hero

If you have any friends still dedicated to playing Black Widow in Marvel Rivals, you might want to check in on them. These players, who have remained loyal to a hero statistically confirmed as the worst on the roster, have spent the past month enduring relentless scrutiny in almost every lobby. Now, developer NetEase has seemingly added insult to injury by introducing a patch that makes the master assassin even weaker.

The most recent Marvel Rivals update arrived this week, bringing the monster hunter Elsa Bloodstone and a suite of Valentine’s Day content to the team-based shooter. While the patch included several helpful quality-of-life improvements, it also adjusted a small group of heroes. Perplexingly, Black Widow was among them. It appears the developers felt her ultimate ability was applying an unintended level of debuff to her targets.

“We called in the Black Widow Program for a reboot; now her stings strictly inflict the correct amount of Vulnerability,” NetEase explained in the official patch notes.

With a current roster of 46 unique characters, Black Widow continues to hold the unenviable title of dead last in win rate. For months, those who main the character have been holding out for a significant buff—a hope that reached a fever pitch following a massive public fallout between several high-profile Twitch streamers.

In late January, the community exploded when an influencer was knocked out of a $40,000 Marvel Rivals tournament. The cause? A teammate who refused to swap off Black Widow, despite pleas to pick a more viable hero to help secure the prize money. The ensuing drama spiraled out of the immediate community and into the mainstream gaming world. One recap video of the situation has already surpassed 4.3 million views, turning Black Widow into a symbol of the game’s balance struggles across social media and news outlets.

While the initial controversy involved specific players, the resulting stigma hit the entire Black Widow player base. Reports began surfacing of “Widow mains” being mocked or harassed during matches, with some teammates even abandoning games the moment she was selected. Despite the toxicity, many fans hoped the spotlight would force NetEase to finally give the character a much-needed power boost. Unfortunately, the opposite happened.

Black Widow’s fortunes have only soured with the latest update. If the atmosphere was tense a month ago, this patch is threatening to push the community over the edge. Disheartened players are now openly questioning if they should abandon the character entirely. The sentiment across forums is one of mourning mixed with disbelief. “THERE’S NO FUCKING WAY THESE FUCKING ASSHOLES NERFED WIDOWS ULT,” one user posted in a heated discussion regarding the changes.

“Should they just remove Widow?” one discouraged fan wondered aloud. “She’s not going to get a rework. No one is going to play her. She will never be part of the meta; she’ll always be seen as a ‘throw’ pick that gets banned immediately in competitive play,” the post added.

While some are still holding out hope for a miracle, many see this latest update as the final blow for the character’s viability.

“The developers barely seem to recognize her, and the hitscan community never truly embraced her,” read one fan’s eulogy for the hero. “In a few years, there will only be a faint memory of a girl who once sang in the Red Room. Then, even that will fade. Goodbye, Black Widow, we hardly knew you.”
