Marvel legend Gerry Conway, creator of The Punisher and Spider-Man’s clone, dies at 73

The comic book world is mourning the loss of industry titan Gerry Conway, the creative force behind iconic figures such as the Punisher, Jason Todd, and Ben Reilly. He was 73. While no formal cause of death has been disclosed, he leaves behind a profound legacy, survived by his wife, Laura, and his daughters, Cara and Rachel.

Conway’s journey in storytelling began early. A Brooklyn native born in 1952, he was already breaking into the industry by age 16, contributing scripts to anthologies like DC’s House of Secrets and Marvel’s Tower of Shadows. His ambition quickly caught the eye of Marvel editor Roy Thomas, leading to a fateful stint on Daredevil. From that point on, Conway became a prolific powerhouse, crafting definitive narratives for Marvel’s biggest icons before he had even reached his 30th birthday.

His tenure on The Amazing Spider-Man stands as one of the most remarkable chapters in modern comics. Taking the reins at just 19, Conway fundamentally reshaped the wall-crawler’s mythos. Between issues #111 and #149, he introduced the Jackal, the Spider-Clone Ben Reilly, and the lethal vigilante known as the Punisher—a character whose real-world appropriation by law enforcement and militia groups Conway notably condemned. His heart-wrenching masterpiece, “The Night Gwen Stacy Died,” remains a cornerstone of the medium. He would later revisit the hero throughout the 1980s, contributing extensively to Spectacular Spider-Man and Web of Spider-Man.

Conway’s influence was staggering. He helped launch the Tomb of Dracula, co-created Werewolf By Night, steered roughly 100 issues of the Justice League, and penned the monumental 1976 crossover, Superman vs. The Amazing Spider-Man.

Beyond the printed page, Conway enjoyed a versatile career in television and animation. During his hiatus from comics (1993–2009), he lent his pen to procedural hits like Law & Order and Diagnosis Murder, while also shaping the landscape of animated television. His credits include beloved series like Batman, Transformers, and My Little Pony, as well as cult classics like The Centurions.
