Madonna Condemns President Trump’s Refusal to Recognize World AIDS Day: ‘It’s Unthinkable’

Long an outspoken supporter of AIDS awareness, Madonna has said she will not retreat from that work — regardless of instructions coming from the Trump administration.

In a forceful Instagram message published on Monday, December 1, 2025, the pop icon criticized the administration for discarding long‑standing precedent by directing officials not to mark World AIDS Day. In her post she called the notion of pretending the day never existed both absurd and unacceptable. (Instagram).

Madonna went on to recall the human toll of the epidemic, saying she has known many people who succumbed to AIDS and stressing that there remains no cure. She contrasted that reality with what she described as a failure of empathy from the current leadership.

The statement followed reports that the State Department circulated a memo advising employees to “refrain from publicly promoting World AIDS Day through any communication channels, including social media, media engagements, speeches or other public‑facing messaging,” and to avoid using U.S. funds to recognize the day — part of a wider directive to limit messaging around commemorative observances. Refusing to let those lives be forgotten, Madonna wrote that she will continue to honor World AIDS Day and urged others to join her in remembrance and action.

Throughout her career, Madonna has been a prominent voice in the fight against HIV/AIDS. She was among the first major artists to speak publicly about the epidemic in the 1980s, despite the stigma and hostility that surrounded it. She has also spoken about close friends she lost to the disease, including Martin Burgoyne and Christopher Flynn.

During her 2023–2024 Celebration Tour, Madonna incorporated a nightly tribute to those affected by AIDS into her performances.
