Move over literary legends; there is a new voice entering the world of children’s literature. Pop sensation Lizzo is officially adding “author” to her multifaceted resume.
During a Monday morning appearance on CBS Mornings, the Grammy-winning artist sat down with Gayle King to reveal her debut picture book, titled Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’. Clutching her signature instrument, the “Rumors” singer shared the inspiration behind the project.
“I am constantly asked about my history with the flute—the ‘how’ and the ‘why,’” Lizzo explained to King. “This book serves as the definitive origin story of how my musical journey actually began.”
The Houston-raised performer revealed that her passion for the written word predates her chart-topping music career. Before dominating the airwaves, she harbored ambitions of writing the “Great American Novel.” She described this new venture as a “beautiful marriage” of her various creative identities.
The book’s title is a direct nod to her famous real-life flute, whose full, regal name is Sasha Beatrice Flootin’ Jefferson Kirkwood Johnson Esquire the III. The moniker was inspired by a fellow Houston icon: Beyoncé.
“She has been such a massive influence on me, particularly during my formative years,” Lizzo told King. “I loved how she utilized an alter ego—shifting from Beyoncé to Sasha Fierce when she stepped onto the stage.”
Lizzo found a similar duality within herself during her college years. While deeply immersed in classical flute studies, she was simultaneously making waves in Houston’s underground rap scene. She admitted to feeling torn between these two worlds until she realized she could merge them through her own persona.
“Sasha Fierce met Sasha Floot,” she remarked with a smile.
Beyond the music, the heart of the story focuses on a universal theme: self-acceptance. “Ultimately, this is a narrative about discovering your own voice,” Lizzo shared. “That discovery only happens when you learn to trust yourself and embrace your authenticity. Regardless of your surroundings, it always starts with you.”
Fans can expect Lil Lizzo Meets Sasha B. Flootin’ to arrive on bookstore shelves on September 9.
