Lizzo is peeling back the layers of her bold new single, “Bitch,” revealing that the track is a powerful exercise in reclaiming her own narrative. In doing so, she draws a direct parallel to Taylor Swift’s transformative “Taylor’s Version” re-release project.
During an appearance on the latest episode of Genius Verified, which premiered this Friday, the Yitty founder explained how her new song—which interpolates Meredith Brooks’ iconic ’90s anthem of the same name—shares the spirit of Swift’s musical reclamation. “I want the world to recognize that this is Meredith Brooks’ record, first and foremost,” Lizzo stated, honoring the original artist.
“There were sentiments expressed in the ’90s that still resonate today,” she continued, explaining the creative evolution behind the track. “However, I felt like the original message needed a modern update to avoid being lost in translation. I approached this as, ‘This is Lizzo’s version.’”
With a knowing smile, she solidified the comparison: “You know how Taylor Swift does ‘Taylor’s Version?’ This is basically ‘Bitch (Lizzo’s Version).’”
Much like Swift’s journey—which began in 2021 as a bold defiance against the sale of her master recordings—Lizzo’s creative process comes amid a season of personal and professional scrutiny. The “Truth Hurts” singer has been navigating significant industry challenges, including a high-profile lawsuit from former dancers alleging a toxic workplace environment and sexual harassment, claims that Lizzo has vehemently and consistently denied.
Regarding the song’s second verse, Lizzo opened up to Genius Verified about the weight of public perception. “I felt like I was internalizing the experiences of so many Black women in this industry who reach a pinnacle of success, only to be hit with derogatory labels,” she shared. “I remember questioning, ‘Why is this even a narrative?’”
“Why aren’t men held to the same standard? Why isn’t there an outcry when a man says, ‘I’m not a jerk, I’m just a CEO?’” Lizzo added. “Society grants men grace. If a man is aggressive in business, it’s framed as leadership. People respect that ambition.”
“Bitch” was released on May 1 and serves as the lead single for Lizzo’s highly anticipated studio album, slated for arrival on June 5.
