Lil Nas X Opens Up About Mental Health and New Music: ‘There’s Less Fear in My Heart’

Lil Nas X has reconnected with his fanbase, offering a candid update regarding his mental health journey and hinting at fresh musical projects on the horizon.

In an Instagram update shared this Wednesday (June 17), the chart-topping artist appeared in a casual, outdoor setting. While he jokingly admitted that recording self-taped videos feels slightly surreal, he expressed a genuine desire to be transparent with his supporters.

Reflecting on his recent absence, the musician shared, “I’ve spent the last several months focusing on my well-being. After a stint in a professional treatment program, I’ve been transitioning back to normalcy—splitting my time between family in Atlanta and my inner circle in Los Angeles. My primary goal has been to center myself and gain some perspective.”

“Integrating a therapist and psychiatrist into my life has been transformative,” he continued. “Coming to terms with a bipolar disorder diagnosis was challenging. For years, I suspected it, but I resisted the label out of fear of stigma and medication. Navigating this world as a Black, queer man is already demanding, and adding this to the mix feels like living on ‘extreme hard mode.’”

Maintaining a positive outlook, the performer noted that he is feeling significantly more stable. “On a serious note, I’m doing much better,” he added. “I’ve found a renewed sense of creative freedom. I’m less afraid, and I’m finally taking the time to truly appreciate my life.”

Looking toward the future, the star expressed gratitude for his seven-year career and teased upcoming releases. “I want you all to know that new music is definitely in the works,” he promised. “I’m not rushing the process, but I’m genuinely thrilled to share this next chapter. We’ve endured so much together, and I’m so thankful for your unwavering support. My only goal is to continue making you proud.”

This update follows a turbulent period for the artist. In April, a judge mandated a two-year mental health treatment program following a 2025 arrest involving a confrontation with law enforcement. The incident occurred after authorities responded to reports of the singer appearing in public in limited attire; he has since entered a plea of not guilty to charges of battery and resisting arrest, which are slated for dismissal upon the successful completion of his treatment.

Lil Nas X’s last significant project, the EP Days Before Dreamboy, arrived in March 2025, following the massive success of his 2021 studio album Montero, which climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
