The legendary Darth Maul, voiced once again by Sam Witwer, is poised to reclaim his dark legacy in Maul: Shadow Lord. This highly anticipated animated odyssey from Lucasfilm Animation is scheduled to arrive on Disney Plus this April 6. While we know the narrative follows Maul as he cultivates a new underworld syndicate on the planet Janix, the latest teaser trailer suggests there are far deeper mysteries for Star Wars devotees to dissect.

Devon Izara and the Sith Doctrine

In the recently released footage, Maul expresses bitter resentment over the Empire’s betrayal. This slight demands a formidable response—specifically, a living weapon capable of dismantling Imperial authority. The trailer lingers on Devon Izara, a young Twi’lek Jedi who has been operating in the shadows since the devastation of Order 66.

“Our combined strength could bring the Empire to its knees,” Maul entices.

The scene shifts to Devon consulting her reptilian Jedi companion. While Maul views them as potential instruments of vengeance, her ally remains steadfast, warning that even if they share a common enemy, the former Sith Lord will never truly be a friend.

Speculation is mounting that Devon might serve as the canon equivalent to Darth Talon, a fan-favorite character from the Legends continuity who served as Maul’s apprentice. If she follows that dark path, her absence in Star Wars: Rebels—where an aged Maul attempts to recruit Ezra Bridger—suggests a tragic fate. Furthermore, if Maul intends to take Devon as a disciple, it raises concerns for her reptilian mentor. Adherence to the Rule of Two leaves no room for third parties, and it would be a shame to lose such a visually striking Jedi character so soon.

The Inquisitorius: Eleventh Brother and Marrok

Audience members first encountered the Eleventh Brother during the Tales of the Jedi episode “Resolve,” where the crow-masked hunter was swiftly bested by Ahsoka Tano. However, his history is being expanded in Tales of the Empire and now Maul: Shadow Lord.

He isn’t the only dark-side enforcer appearing in the trailer. He is accompanied by Marrok, the enigmatic warrior who famously appeared in the Ahsoka live-action series. In this timeline, Marrok seems to be hunting Captain Brander Lawson, a disillusioned officer on Janix determined to bring Maul to justice. Because Shadow Lord is set in the immediate wake of Revenge of the Sith, we may finally learn the Jedi origins of these two deadly Inquisitors.

A Gathering of Nightbrothers

Maul’s efforts to consolidate power extend beyond local criminals; he appears to be reuniting with his Zabrak kin. The trailer features a squad of Zabrak warriors, heavily armed with explosives and blasters, engaging Imperial stormtroopers. While these could be mere mercenaries found on Janix, there is a strong possibility they are Nightbrothers—the warrior caste from Dathomir who once served the Nightsisters.

Having been raised under the matriarchal rule of Mother Talzin, Maul is intimately aware of the Nightbrothers’ strength and their historical subjugation. Following the near-extinction of the Nightsisters, these warriors are adrift. We know Maul eventually returns to Dathomir during the Imperial Era; if he rallies his brothers during his time on Janix, they may provide the elite vanguard necessary to cement his new criminal dominion.
