Baldur’s Gate 3 Unlikely for Switch 2 Despite Developer Interest

Baldur’s Gate 3 has cemented its legacy as one of the most decorated RPGs of the modern era, sparking a fervent desire among fans to see it ported to every available device. While the title is already a mainstay on handhelds like the Steam Deck, the recent debut of the Switch 2 had many hoping for a Nintendo release. Optimism spiked following the announcement that Larian’s previous masterpiece, Divinity: Original Sin II, would arrive on the new hardware. Unfortunately, it appears this D&D epic will not be following suit.

This disappointing news surfaced during a recent Reddit AMA where members of Larian Studios engaged with the community. When directly asked if a Switch 2 port was technically feasible, Larian CEO Swen Vincke clarified, “We would have loved to but it wasn’t our decision to make.”

Vincke’s comment likely alludes to the shifting relationship between Larian and the D&D license holder, Wizards of the Coast. Following the monumental success of Baldur’s Gate 3, Larian opted to move away from the franchise to pursue original, independent projects. While the studio remains dedicated to patching the current version, they do not have full autonomy over future platform expansions. While the exact hurdles remain speculative, it is now clear that a Nintendo port is not currently in the cards.

For those eager for Larian’s next chapter, the studio has officially announced its next project, currently known as Divinity. In the meantime, you can catch up on the final major update for Baldur’s Gate 3 or revisit why it topped our list of the best games of 2023.
