Square Enix has confirmed that the Kingdom Hearts series has reached a new sales milestone: cumulative shipments have topped 38 million copies. The revised figures show an increase of one million over the past year, highlighting the franchise’s resilience more than two decades after its debut.
The first game launched in 2002 and quickly attracted attention as an unusual collaboration that brought together Square Enix with Disney and Pixar characters. Across the main entries and numerous spin-offs, players follow Sora, Donald and Goofy as they travel through a variety of Disney worlds and confront hostile forces. Over the years the narrative has grown into one of the most complex in modern RPGs, addressing themes of friendship, identity and the conflict between light and darkness.
Commercially, the series continues to be a dependable success for Square Enix. At the beginning of 2025 total sales were over 37 million, and the figure has now surpassed 38 million. Kingdom Hearts III remains the fastest-selling entry with 6.7 million copies. The original Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II also continue to sell well, at roughly 6.3 million and about 5.2 million copies respectively. HD collections and spin-offs have further boosted interest, keeping the series popular across multiple console generations.
Square Enix has not yet announced a release date for Kingdom Hearts IV, though development is ongoing.
