Karl Urban Ready to Return as Judge Dredd in Upcoming Taika Waititi Film

Karl Urban, widely recognized for his gritty performance as Billy Butcher in The Boys, has once again expressed his desire to don the helmet of Judge Dredd.

During a guest appearance on The Discourse podcast, Urban admitted that he would “love to return to the role” of the lawman he portrayed in the 2012 cult classic. However, the actor maintained a selfless perspective on the franchise’s future, noting that he would support a new project even if he wasn’t part of the cast, as long as the character’s legacy is respected.

Speculation regarding a cinematic revival for the 2000 AD icon reached a fever pitch in July 2025. Reports from The Hollywood Reporter suggested that director Taika Waititi, known for Thor: Love and Thunder, has been tapped to lead a fresh adaptation based on the original comic strips.

The production team boasts an impressive lineup, including franchise rights holders Chris Kingsley, Jason Kingsley, and Ben Smith of Rebellion Developments, alongside Roy Lee from Vertigo Entertainment, Jeremy Platt, and Natalie Viscuso. While Drew Pearce (Iron Man 3) is reportedly crafting the screenplay, specific plot details, casting updates, and an official release window have yet to be disclosed.

According to sources at The Hollywood Reporter, this latest iteration aims to align more closely with the source material than previous film versions, while ensuring the narrative “reflects contemporary culture.”
