Modder Turns Diablo Into a 3D Shooter With Multiplayer and Scalable Interface
Players will be able to turn on an authentic-looking sky.
A modder who goes by Drelvak has published a new video diary about developing a large-scale mod for the original Diablo. The mod turns Blizzard Entertainment’s classic ARPG into a first-person 3D shooter and offers a different perspective on the game.
Controls use WASD and the mouse, while the original game logic stays in place: “movement is still cell-based.” Players can instantly switch between the classic isometric view and the new 3D view by pressing the G key, as in Diablo II: Resurrected.
To build the 3D versions of Diablo’s locations, the modder used assets from the game’s in-game cutscenes, which gives the result an authentic look. He also cut a piece of sky from those cutscenes to create a skybox. The skybox is optional, so players can turn the sky off. In that case, empty black space appears instead.

Drelvak also added multiplayer and has already tested it on a local network. He also fixed a long-standing interface scaling problem. In his version, the isometric zoom and the interface size no longer depend on each other, so players can freely change the HUD scale.
Drelvak says the mod is now “already half” of Diablo. Work on it continues to move forward gradually.
