Kadokawa Names Top 10 Anime of the Year — “Solo Leveling” Loses to “The Defeated Heroines” for Best Anime at the NewType Awards
Kadokawa conducted its annual vote to determine Japan’s anime of the year.
NewType magazine, owned by Kadokawa, recently published the results of its yearly NewType Awards on its X account. The poll covered every anime released between July 2024 and April 2025.
The top honor went surprisingly to the romantic comedy “Too Many Losing Heroines!”, a title that had not been regarded as a favorite beforehand.
“Solo Leveling” achieved massive global popularity, ranking among the most-streamed shows and taking a prize at the 2024 Crunchyroll Anime Awards. Still, in the NewType ballot its second season finished only in fourth place. It’s notable that both “Too Many Losing Heroines!” and “Solo Leveling” were produced by the same studio, A-1 Pictures.
The NewType Awards top 10 are as follows:
- “Too Many Losing Heroines!”
- “Mobile Suit Gundam: GQuuuuuuX”
- “The Pharmacist’s Monologue (Season 2)”
- “Solo Leveling (Season 2)”
- “Pony Girls: The Gray Cinderella”
- “Medalist”
- “Dandadan”
- “Apocalypse: Hotel”
- “Re:Zero − Starting Life in Another World (Season 3)”
- “Idol Child 2”
As a reminder, last year’s NewType Awards winner was “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End,” which is scheduled to return for its second season on January 16, 2026.
