Kacey Musgraves Breaks Silence on Long-Standing Friction with Miranda Lambert

Following a series of cryptic social media interactions that sparked intense fan speculation, Kacey Musgraves has officially confirmed that the rumored rift between her and Miranda Lambert was very much a reality. While the two country icons have recently found common ground through their upcoming collaboration, “Horses and Divorces,” Musgraves admitted that their relationship was strained for over a decade.

In a candid interview with NPR published on March 11, Musgraves reflected on the origins of their discord, citing their shared roots as small-town Texas artists who arrived in Nashville at different stages of their careers. “We’ve definitely had our history,” Musgraves noted, acknowledging the competitive undercurrents that often accompany similar career trajectories.

The ‘Mama’s Broken Heart’ Controversy

The catalyst for much of this tension dates back fifteen years to the hit single “Mama’s Broken Heart.” At the time, Musgraves was a burgeoning songwriter at Warner/Chappell and had intended for the track to be her own debut single. However, the song was pitched to Lambert without Musgraves’ knowledge or approval.

“It was a complicated situation,” Musgraves explained. “I loved that song deeply, but it was presented to her behind the scenes. She fell in love with it and wanted it for herself.” Lambert eventually included the track on her 2011 album, Four the Record, where it became a major crossover hit, peaking at No. 20 on the Billboard Hot 100. Consequently, Musgraves had to pivot, eventually launching her career with “Merry Go ‘Round.”

A Shared Path Through ‘Horses and Divorces’

The two artists remained estranged for years, rarely communicating until a moment of realization struck Musgraves while scrolling through Instagram. Observing Lambert with her horses, Musgraves—who finalized her divorce from Ruston Kelly in 2020—recognized a profound, if ironic, similarity in their lives.

“I thought to myself, ‘We might not be friends, but we certainly have two things in common: horses and divorces,'” Musgraves shared. This spark of inspiration led her to reach out to Lambert, who went through a highly publicized divorce from Blake Shelton in 2015.

Musgraves recounted her blunt approach: “I just messaged her and said, ‘Look, we’ve had our issues, but we have this shared experience. I’m not asking to be your best friend, but I think we could write a legendary song about this.’ To her credit, Miranda was immediately on board.”

Healing Through Songwriting

The resulting collaboration proved to be a cathartic experience. Musgraves revealed that they “aired out the laundry,” shared a few laughs, and finished writing the track in just a few hours. She views the reconciliation as a broader metaphor for conflict resolution: “I wish the world could do that more often—just sit down, have a beer, poke a little fun at the situation, and move on.”

The confirmation of their peace treaty follows a viral Instagram moment where Musgraves shared a vintage clip of herself looking famously unimpressed while Lambert accepted a 2013 CMA Award. Lambert humorously reposted the clip, admitting that she had also done her “fair share of trash-talking” over the years.

“Horses and Divorces” will be featured on Musgraves’ highly anticipated new album, Middle of Nowhere, set for release on May 1. The project also boasts guest appearances from Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, and Gregory Allan Isakov.
